English Collocation Studies - The OSTI Report (Hardcover, New): Ramesh Krishnamurthy English Collocation Studies - The OSTI Report (Hardcover, New)
Ramesh Krishnamurthy; Robert Daley, Susan Jones, John Sinclair
R5,910 Discovery Miles 59 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is the first published edition of John Sinclair, Susan Jones and Robert Daley's research on collocation undertaken in 1970. The unpublished report was circulated amongst a small group of academics and was enormously influential, sparking a growth of interest in collocation amongst researchers in linguistics. Collocation was first viewed as important in computational linguistics in the work of Harold Palmer in Japan. Later M.A.K. Halliday and John Sinclair published on collocation in the 1960s. English Collocation Studies is a report on empirical research into collocation, devised by Halliday with Sinclair acting as the Principal Investigator and editor of the resultant OSTI report. The present edition contains an introduction by Professor Wolfgang Teubert based on his interview with John Sinclair. The introduction assesses the extent to which the findings of the original research have developed in the intervening years, and how some of the techniques mentioned in the report were implemented in the COBUILD project at Birmingham University in the 1980s.

Portraits of Everyday Literacy for Social Justice - Reframing the Debate for Families and Communities (Hardcover, 1st ed.... Portraits of Everyday Literacy for Social Justice - Reframing the Debate for Families and Communities (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Susan Jones
R2,796 Discovery Miles 27 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Based on an ethnographic study involving three families who live on a Midlands council housing estate, this book presents portraits of everyday lives - and the literacy practices that are part of them - as a way to explore the complex relationship between literacy and social justice. Each portrait focuses on a different aspect of literacy in everyday life: drawing on perspectives offered by the long and diverse tradition of literacy studies, each is followed by discussion of a different way of looking at literacy and what this means for social justice. The lens of literacy allows us to see the challenges faced by many families and communities as a result of social policy, and how a narrow view of literacy is often implicated within these challenges. It also illustrates the ways in which literacy practices are powerful resources in the creative and collaborative navigation of everyday lives. Arguing for the importance of looking carefully at everyday literacy in order to understand the intertwining factors that threaten justice, this book positions literary research and education as central to the struggle for wider social change. It will be of interest and value to researchers, educators and students of literacy for social justice.

Dopamine - Glutamate Interactions in the Basal Ganglia (Hardcover, New): Susan Jones Dopamine - Glutamate Interactions in the Basal Ganglia (Hardcover, New)
Susan Jones
R5,349 Discovery Miles 53 490 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The basal ganglia are involved in complex brain functions, from voluntary movement control to learning and reward processing, and they are implicated in numerous neurological and psychiatric disorders. Information from the cerebral cortex and thalamus is conveyed to basal ganglia nuclei via glutamate release, while dopamine from the midbrain is released in close proximity to glutamate. At the heart of both function and dysfunction of basal ganglia circuits is the interaction of these two neurotransmitters, dopamine and glutamate.

Elucidating the relationship between their molecular and cellular effects and behavioural significance has been challenging, but in the past 5 10 years, improved labeling, imaging, recording, and genetic manipulation approaches have yielded new information on how dopamine and glutamate interact to generate the circuit activity underpinning basal ganglia function. Dopamine Glutamate Interactions in the Basal Ganglia synthesizes this recent research from the level of receptor molecules all the way to complex behaviours and disease.

Current insights from research on individual neurons and synapses, detailed circuit analysis, and learning and action functions of the basal ganglia are presented against a historical perspective. The book also discusses compromised dopamine glutamate interaction in disorders of basal ganglia function, including Parkinson s disease, Huntington s disease, and drug addiction.

Joseph Conrad; Introduction by Susan Jones; Notes by Susan Jones; Series edited by Keith Carabine

Introduction and Notes by Susan Jones, St Hilda's College, Oxford. First published in 1900, Lord Jim established Conrad as one of the great storytellers of the twentieth century. Set in the Malay Archipelago, the novel not only provides a gripping account of maritime adventure and romance, but also an exotic tale of the East. Its themes also challenge the conventions of nineteenth-century adventure fiction, confirming Conrad's place in literature as one of the first 'modernists' of English letters. Lord Jim explores the dilemmas of conscience, of moral isolation, of loyalty and betrayal confronting a sensitive individual whose romantic quest for an honourable ideal are tested to the limit. In this novel, Conrad draws on his background as Polish emigre, as well as his first-hand experience as a seaman, to experiment radically with the presentation of human frailty and doubt in the modern world.

Susan Jones
R1,600 Discovery Miles 16 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Text and Context: Document Storage and Processing describes information processing techniques, including those which do not appear in conventional textbooks on database systems. It focuses on the input, storage, retrieval and presentation of primarily textual information, together with auxiliary material about graphic and video data. There are chapters on text analysis as a basis for lexicography, full-text databases and information retrieval, the use of optical storage for both ASCII text and scanned document images, hypertext and multi-media systems, abstract document definition, and document formatting and imaging. The material is treated in an informal way with an emphasis on real applications and software. There are, among others, case studies from Reuters, British Airways, St. Bartholomew's Hospital, Sony, and HMSO. Relevant industry standards are discussed including ISO 9660 for CD-ROM file storage, CCITT Group4 data compression, the Standard Generalised Markup Language and Office Document Architecture, and the Postscript language. Readers will benefit from the way Susan Jones has brought together this information, in a logical sequence, to highlight the connections between related topics. This book will be of interest to second and third year undergraduates and MSc students in computer science, to B/TEC HTD final year computing and information science students either specialising in IT or taking an IT option, and to students taking courses in IT and in business computing systems.

Literature, Modernism, and Dance (Hardcover): Susan Jones Literature, Modernism, and Dance (Hardcover)
Susan Jones
R3,405 Discovery Miles 34 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores the complex relationship between literature and dance in the era of modernism. During this period an unprecedented dialogue between the two art forms took place, based on a common aesthetics initiated by contemporary discussions of the body and gender, language, formal experimentation, primitivism, anthropology, and modern technologies such as photography, film, and mechanisation. The book traces the origins of this relationship to the philosophical antecedents of modernism in the nineteenth century and examines experimentation in both art forms. The book investigates dance's impact on the modernists' critique of language and shows the importance to writers of choreographic innovations by dancers of the fin de siecle, of the Ballets Russes, and of European and American experimentalists in non-balletic forms of modern dance. A reciprocal relationship occurs with choreographic use of literary text. Dance and literature meet at this time at the site of formal experiments in narrative, drama, and poetics, and their relationship contributes to common aesthetic modes such as symbolism, primitivism, expressionism, and constructivism. Focussing on the first half of the twentieth century, the book locates these transactions in a transatlantic field, giving weight to both European and American contexts and illustrating the importance of dance as a conduit of modernist preoccupations in Europe and the US through patterns of influence and exchange. Chapters explore the close interrelationships of writers and choreographers of this period including Mallarme, Nietzsche, Yeats, Conrad, Woolf, Lawrence, Pound, Eliot, and Beckett, Fuller, Duncan, Fokine, Nijinsky, Massine, Nijinska, Balanchine, Tudor, Laban, Wigman, Graham, and Humphrey, and recover radical experiments by neglected writers and choreographers from David Garnett and Esther Forbes to Andree Howard and Oskar Schlemmer.

Conrad and Women (Hardcover): Susan Jones Conrad and Women (Hardcover)
Susan Jones
R4,795 Discovery Miles 47 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book challenges the traditional image of Conrad as writer of the sea, a man in a man's world. It re-establishes the importance of significant women in his life, and his engagement with women's writing and the female readers of his fiction. Rethinking received views of Conrad as a modernist writer, it explores the experimentation of his later, less familiar works, first published in the women's pages of popular journals.
