This is the first published edition of John Sinclair, Susan Jones
and Robert Daley's research on collocation undertaken in 1970. The
unpublished report was circulated amongst a small group of
academics and was enormously influential, sparking a growth of
interest in collocation amongst researchers in linguistics.
Collocation was first viewed as important in computational
linguistics in the work of Harold Palmer in Japan. Later M.A.K.
Halliday and John Sinclair published on collocation in the 1960s.
English Collocation Studies is a report on empirical research into
collocation, devised by Halliday with Sinclair acting as the
Principal Investigator and editor of the resultant OSTI report. The
present edition contains an introduction by Professor Wolfgang
Teubert based on his interview with John Sinclair. The introduction
assesses the extent to which the findings of the original research
have developed in the intervening years, and how some of the
techniques mentioned in the report were implemented in the COBUILD
project at Birmingham University in the 1980s.

close examination of educational practices in schools serving
low-income and minority students with disturbing trends. The
articles discuss the findings that students in high-poverty and
high-minority schools see little connection between what is being
taught and a better future for themselves. Also contained are a

The basal ganglia are involved in complex brain functions, from
voluntary movement control to learning and reward processing, and
they are implicated in numerous neurological and psychiatric
disorders. Information from the cerebral cortex and thalamus is
conveyed to basal ganglia nuclei via glutamate release, while

cellular effects and behavioural significance has been challenging,
but in the past 5 10 years, improved labeling, imaging, recording,
and genetic manipulation approaches have yielded new information on
how dopamine and glutamate interact to generate the circuit
activity underpinning basal ganglia function. Dopamine Glutamate

from the level of receptor molecules all the way to complex
behaviours and disease.
Current insights from research on individual neurons and
synapses, detailed circuit analysis, and learning and action

This book explores the complex relationship between literature and
dance in the era of modernism. During this period an unprecedented
dialogue between the two art forms took place, based on a common
aesthetics initiated by contemporary discussions of the body and
gender, language, formal experimentation, primitivism,
anthropology, and modern technologies such as photography, film,
and mechanisation. The book traces the origins of this relationship
to the philosophical antecedents of modernism in the nineteenth
century and examines experimentation in both art forms. The book
investigates dance's impact on the modernists' critique of language
and shows the importance to writers of choreographic innovations by
dancers of the fin de siecle, of the Ballets Russes, and of
European and American experimentalists in non-balletic forms of
modern dance. A reciprocal relationship occurs with choreographic
use of literary text. Dance and literature meet at this time at the
site of formal experiments in narrative, drama, and poetics, and
